Definition
An online polarizer, also known as an online polarizer, is a device used to obtain linearly polarized light in a specific direction from natural light or randomly polarized light.

It is usually designed for use in fiber optic communications, fiber optic sensing, laser systems and other applications to achieve polarization control of light waves.

The process of making natural light into polarized light is called polarization, and the corresponding device is called a polarizer.

As shown in the figure, the light that passes through the polarizer becomes linearly polarized light with the light vibration direction parallel to the direction of the transmission axis.

The process of testing whether a beam of light is linearly polarized is called analyzer, and the corresponding device is called an analyzer. Polarizing plates can be used as analyzers.

3.   Function

The main function of the online polarizer is to allow light waves in a specific direction to pass through while blocking light waves in other directions.

This characteristic gives online polarizers significant advantages in attenuating orthogonal polarized light and improving the extinction ratio of polarized signals.

4.  Working principle

Selective passage of light:

When natural light passes through a polarizing material, only light in the same direction as allowed by the material can pass through, while light in other directions is blocked.

This is because the internal structure of the polarizing material allows only light waves in a specific direction to vibrate through.

Determination of polarization state:

By adjusting the structure or direction of the polarizing material, the polarization state of the light passing through can be controlled.

In-line polarizers are usually designed to allow only linearly polarized light to pass through, that is, light waves vibrate in a fixed plane.

Application and effect:

In-line polarizers are widely used in fiber optic communications, fiber optic sensing, and optical measurement.

It can improve signal transmission efficiency, reduce noise interference, and enhance system stability and accuracy. 

For example, in fiber amplifiers, fiber lasers, and high-speed communication systems, in-line polarizers can ensure that the polarization state of the optical signal meets the requirements,

thereby improving system performance.


5.  Application

(1) Fiber lasers: In fiber lasers, in-line polarizers can be used to control the polarization state of the laser to ensure the stability and consistency of the laser.

PMD is an important parameter in optical fiber communications, which affects the transmission speed and quality of signals.

Online polarizers can be used to monitor PMD and help optimize the performance of optical fiber systems.
